Super Colon Cleanse Information

The inevitable questions regarding herbal colon cleansing are usually the following:

  • Is a herbal colon cleanse viable?
  • Is it legitimate or just marketing hype?
  • Are there super colon cleanse products or processes out there that actually works?

There are.

In this web article, I will address and review some of the best herbal colon cleansing products on the market as well as give you a common sense checklist of what to look for in an herbal colon cleanse or super colon cleanse product.

I'll also share what's worked for me.

What's more, there will be no affiliate links on this page so you'll know my motivation is genuine. I simply want to help. I don't proclaim to be the found of all medical or alternative or allopathic wisdom. Not by a long shot. Fundamentally, I want to use what works. I'd like to think I'm open minded enough to try other alternatives other than the "normal" ones.

Okay, enough preamble. Let's get to it.

Quick Review of Colon Cleanse Herbs

Colon cleansing used to be within the purview of the "health nuts" but no more. Colon health, or intestinal health, is a fundamental aspect of your body's health -- more and more people believe that now. It makes sense as the intestinal tract is the sewage system of the body.

Inextricably linked with the colon cleanse movement, if you'll excuse the pun, is good herbs. In almost all colon cleaning products you will see a combination of these ingredients and for good reason.

So, what are they? Here are the best herbs for colon health:

  • Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa): This perennial herb has many wonderful health qualities including it prevents hardening of the arteries and is an infection fighter. It also helps in controling diabetes and is highly nutritional. It is not a laxative per se and may be included in some herbal colon cleanse formulas for its formidible nutritional profile.
  • Aloe (Aloe Vera): Aloe is an under appreciated medicinal herb or food. It can can rid the body of warts and for other skin issues, e.g., sunburn, burns, traumatized tissue, insect bites, irritated skin du to plant stings, etc. It also can help heal damaged stomach and intestinal tissue -- this is one of the reasons why it is included in colon cleaning products. It also has an under rated, under appreciated nutritional profile as well.
  • Barberry Bark (Berberis Vulgaris): Sometimes called Rocky Mountain Grape Root. This herb specifically influences the liver and gall bladder. It helps the bile to flow better. This is important for bile is a built-in laxative, but is gentle in its application. This medicinal herb is also a blood purfiying or alterative herb. It's also an antisyphilitic, tonic herb as well.
  • Black Walnut Hulls (Juglans Nigra): A powerful vermicide. It is teeming with potassium iodine and thus is an excellent remedy for scrofula, syphilis, diptheria and other issues blood related. It is also helpful with relaxed and ballooned intestines, expelling ringworm (again a strong vermicide), hemorrhoids, diarrhea, and is good as a muscle and nerve food as it has an abundance of magnesium sulphate). Its inclusion is undoubtedly, however, for its strong vermicidal qualities. Many people carry intestinal parasites and are completely unaware of it.cascara sagrada
  • Cascara Sagrada Bark (Rhamnus Purshiana): A very potent medicinal herb that will induce a large movement. It can also cause severe cramps as it traverses the lower intestinal tract. It is an herbal laxative that influences or increases the secretions of the liver, pancreas and liver. It's one of the most potent natural herbs for stimulating a sluggish and under performing intestinal tract. It's potent, safe but use wisely. Just be advised: it is a strong purgative herb.
  • Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum Fastigiatum): One of the very best medicinal spices in the world. In fact, it is a secret weapon of many health conscious individuals. (For more info on the miraculous health benefits of cayenne, visit CayennePepper.info.) This herb's functions are mildly laxative although hot cayenne (90k Scoville Heat Units or hotter) tend to have increased laxative  andpurgative action. The body soon adapts, though. This herb (or specifically medicinal spice) helps in removing some excess fecal matter but it's real benefit with an herbal colon cleanse is its accentuating function. In other words, it makes all other herbs it's teamed with more powerful and efficacious.
  • Chamomile Flower (too numerous to write all Latin names): There are numerous chamomile flowers in the chamomile family. This flower or herb has many therapeutic and health benefits including reducing inflammation, eliminates headaches, is a great beauty aid, and is great for skin problems. It is also a good herb for relieving asthmatic attacks in children as well as adults.
  • Elecampane Plant (Inula Helenium): Good for bronchitis, chest colds, pneumonia, asthma. Its inclusion in herbal colon cleanse products is probably due to its quick healing and pain-mitigating properties.
  • False Unicorn Root (Helonias Dioica): A stimulating tonic, diuretic, emetic and sialagogue. This herb is one of the beststimulative tonics to the female uterus andovaries. Actually, it can help heal regenerative problems in both the female and male reproductive organs, specifically for males, the all important prostate gland. Very beneficial to the mucous membranes. It also is superb for digestive disorders. It also helps expel tapeworms. For these final two qualities, it is well worth its inclusion in herbal colon cleaning products.
  • Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare): An under appreciated herb. This herb assists in its relief of cramps, indigestion, flatulence and nausea. It even has some vermicidal functionality in helping to expel pinworms, a common intestinal parasite in humans. It also helps relieve hepatic conditions in the liver an gall bladder and helps stimulate and restore proper function of those critical organs.
  • Flax Seed (Linus Usitatissimum): Among the many health benefits of flax seed, it is a superb laxative as it holds many times its weight when allowed to soak into the liquid for a while, ideally four hours. Also a superb source of omega-3 fatty acids. Lastly, a study by the American Association of Cancer Research reported that flax seed showed a definite reduction "in the rate of tumor growth."
  • Garlic (Allium Sativum): By far, one of the greatest foods and herbs in the plant kingdom. In truth, one of the greatest healing, versatile foods in the world. Besides its superb flavoring agent capability in an assortment of cooking, garlic is good for healing influenza, expelling parasites in the body, removing skin infections, is helpful for diabetes, healing sexually transmitted diseases, lowering cholesterol, cleaning the blood, etc. It was used in World War I  as an antiseptic adn vulnerary agent. Its anthelmintic properties and action plus its healing qualities is enough reason to include it in any colon cleansing product.
  • Gentian Root (Gentiana Lutea): A very bitter herb but has superb anthelmintic (vermifuge properties), antispetic, antibilious, antiperiodic, and antivenemous capabilities (this is not a comprehensive list). It tones the liver and does so without increasing the secretion of bile. Specifically, it helps with anemia, bites, early stage cancer, bruises, chronic indigestion, diarrhea, general debility of the digestive organs, etc. You can see from these preceding points why it is included in herbal colon cleansing products.
  • Ginger (Zingiber Officinale): One of the best, most versatile herbs in the world. Its health benefits are like cayenne -- they're almost unbelievable. This is a wonderful herb that is wonderful in soothing stomach aches, motion sickness, flatulence and cramps. It's terrific for alleviating stomach nausea although not as good as slippery elm, in my opinion. It also helps to break up catarrh or phlegm and mucuous.
  • Golden Seal Root (Hydrastic Candaensis): This herb is powerful and thus should be used with discretion. It is a mild laxative (a aperient, in other words), a tonic and good for the mucous membranes. It's also an antiseptic herb. It also helps purify the blood. I mentioned this herb should be used wisely. Well, if you take it for two months straight, you're asking for trouble. If you do that, it will interfer with the colon's ability to manufacture B vitamins. Also pregnant women should avoid taking it as well. John Heinerman, PH.d, also recommends that those with hypoglycemia avoid using it.
  • Grapefruit Pectin: Grapefruit contains the fiber called pectin. this pectin is believed to help lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol). It's also purported to have antiparasitic, antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial qualities as well. Its natural fibrous quality makes it a natural to include in herbal colon cleanse products.

  • Hyssop Leaf (Hyssopus Officinalis): This medicinal herb is a diaphoretic and anthelmintic and as such is excellent for the expulsion of parasite worms in the human intestinal tract. Its inclusion in herbal cleansing agents is not a surprise. It's also healing to the bladder, kidneys and spleen. It also possesses stimulation to dryness in the bowel. It also helps to increase blood circulation. Its purgative properties will help to influence a good, gentle bowel movement.
  • Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra): It has purgative properties and will help result in a good bowel movement. In the words of famed herbalist Dr. John Christopehr, "Licorice is one of the oldest, mildest and yet most efficient laxatives (aperients), and is especially safe and effective for delicate or constipated children." Thus, it is included in many colon cleanse products.  It also helps soothe and lubricate while nourishing the intestinal tract. Its aperient capability notwithstanding, that is not its only capability, however. It also helps with inflammation of mucous membranes and skin and its taste is quite well regarded. Not many herbs are made into candy, or serve as a base for candy but licorice does. IT's also good for coughing, sore throat, hoarseness, and even hemorrhoids.
  • Lobelia (Lobelia Inflata): The grandfather of medicinal herbs. This herb was a staple of Samuel Thomson who established the seminal beginnings of medicinal herbs in America in the 19th century. It is an accentuating herb that makes any laxative formula more efficient. It also has an anti-spasmodic capability and helps eliminate cramps, which can occur with potent colon cleansing products.
  • Male Fern Root (Aspidium Filix-mas): Has formidable anthelmintic capabilities and thus will help expel worms from the human intestinal tract. Worms it can help expel include pin, round and tape worms. Dr. John Christopher wrote, "The European Aspidium will rarely, if ever, fail where one is after worms" (School of Natural Healing, 1976, p. 111). It's obvious why it's in Colonix and other herbal colon cleansing products.
  • Marshmallow Root (Althea Officinalis): Among its many qualities, marshmallow root is a nutritive, emollient, vulnerary and laxative herb. It is useful in a whole host of health issues including but not limited to chronic constipation, kidney and bladder inflammation, dysentery, burns, swollen or inflamed joints, and weak digestion. • Oregon Grape Root (Berberis Aquifolium): Sometimes used as a substitute if Barberry Bark is unavailable. They are from the same botanical family and essentially has the same functionality as Barberry. It is a blood purifier and liver stimulant. It promites digestion, improves absorption and increases strength and vitality.
  • Pau D'Arco: This nondescript herb has strong antiparasite or anthelmintic properties. Also helpful with its potent antibacterial functionality.
  • Peppermint Leaf (Mentha Piperta): Wonderful for its taste, this under appreciated herb is a stimulant, antispasmodic, emmenagogue and is an herb that stimulates the heart and helps cleanse the entire body. It also has superb soporific properties (sleep inducing) properties. Helps expel flatulency in both the stomach and bowels, and helps even with toothaches. Due to its wonderful smell taste and smell, it's often used as a flavoring agent in a whole assortment of products from toothpastes to mints to aromatic incense.
  • Prickly Ash Bark Powder (Zanthoxylum Americanum): General stimulant, tonic, antiseptic, diuretic, and nervine agent. Will remove obstructions in every part of the body, including the bowels, hence its inclusion in colon cleanse formulas. Medicinal uses include using it for asthma, cholera, diarrhea, ulcers, sluggish circulation, flatulence, and scrofula among many others.
  • Psyllium Husks or Psyllium Seeds (Plantago Ovata): Clinical studies show that psyllium alone is superior in its laxative action to other laxatives in the herbal kingdom but psyllium husksalso in the allopathic approach as well. Products like milk of magnesia or mineral oil pale in capability to psyllium. It's even better than cascara sagrada some think and I have to agree from personal experience. Cascara sagrada is very potent but can give strong intestinal cramps. Psyllium, especially when combined with slippery elm bark powder, doesn't give such cramps. It is a very potent laxative and is a staple of many herbal colon cleanse products as well as other commercial products like Metamucil powder and crackers. Like all the herbs on this list, it's also very inexpensive and readily obtainable. According to a study conducted by medical doctors in Southern California, psyllium helped to relieve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in many of the patients in the study.
  • Pumpkin Seeds (Curcurbita Peop): Possesses strong anthelmintic, diuretic, and nutritive capabilities. A very sure agent in helping to expel worms, i.e., tape and round worms. Also helps with renal or urinary health probems although there are other more potent renal-specific herbs available. Its anthelmintic properties is why it's included in home colon cleanse products.red raspberry leaf powder
  • Red Raspberry Leaves (Rubus Idaeus): As you undoubtedly know, iron is important to our health but it is difficult to get. This herb supplies iron to the human system via the form of citrate of iron. This is vital for blood health both in blood making but also in regulating properties. This herb is specifically an antiseptic, antidiarrheal, mildly laxative, and is an hemostatic herb. It is truly one of the most under appreciated, unknown yet phenomenal herbs in the herbal kingdom. In fact, many of the anecdotes regarding this herb are almost unbelievable.
  • Rose Hip Fruit: Rose hips are an abundant natural source of vitamin C and possesses an impressive nutritional profile. Among its impressive medicinal uses, the fruit has value in a colon cleanse product as the pectin and fruit acid content of the seeds have a laxative and mildly diuretic effect, hence its inclusion.
  • Senna Leaf (Cassia Acutifolia): Dr. John Heinerman in his book Encyclopedia of Healing Herbs & Spices (1996) says that "The only thing you ever need to remember about senna is this: If your bowels are hopelessly blocked up, and nothing else seems to work, then senna will surely clean you out fast. It is the herbal equivalent of dynamite and will remove even the most impacted feces within a matter of hours" (p. 425). Heinerman recommends taking it with cinammon. It has marvelous purgative and laxative functionality and needless to say, that is why it's included in many colon cleaning products.
  • Slippery Elm (Ulmus Fulva): Slippery elm is in a class of its own for its uber-soothing capabilities. When combined with strong laxatives like cascara sagrada or psyllium husks, it mitigates the potency of those herbs while allowing them to retain their strengths.
  • Turkey Rhubarb Root (Rheum Palmatum): This herb is also a mild aperient or laxative herb. It is so soothing it can be used for tiny babies for non-cramping, easy bowel movements. It is an astringent, tonic, laxative and a strong purgative herb. One of its many wonderful qualities is that it is a strong post-constipation herb -- it doesn't clog the way so many cathartics do. It also can stanch diarrhea caused by irritating substances in the intestinal tract or large colon.
  • Turmeric Root (Curcuma Longa or Curcuma Domestica): Part of the ginger family, this herb is helpful against diabetes, flatulence, skin problems, eye and ear discharges, and even helps stop bleeding during pregnancy. Oh, it also has remarkable anti-inflammatory properties and thus is good for combating arthritis, facilitating healing with fractures and sprains. If that wasn't enough, it's a wonderful spice for cooking (I can vouch for that!).
  • Uva Ursi Leaf (Arctostaphylos Uva-Ursi): Superb for kidney problems including nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) and renal calculi (kidney stones), a tea made from the leaves and berries of the plant are just what the doctor ordered. This herb, in fact, is mostly known as the "female herb" but that is not its only usage. It's perfectly safe for men too. One of its interesting medicinal qualities is that helps cardiac edema. Plus, It also helps heal syphilis, gonorrhea, prostate weakness, hemorrhoids, bloody discharges, uterine ulceration strangury uterine hemorrhage. A formidable herb to say the least.
  • Wormwood (Artemisia Absinthium): This herb is renowned as one of the very bitterest tasting herbs in nature. According to Dr. John R. Christopher, next to the herb rue, it is the bitterest. However, it has many potent therapeutic actions  including but not limited to tonic, stimulant, antiseptic, hepatic, antibilious, vermifuge stomachic. It has wonderful vermicidal capabilities as well. The leaves and flowers of the herb expel lumbricoid worms in the body and intestinal tract and are superb for toning the liver and clearing bilious conditions in the body. It also helps expel flatus from the gastro-intestinal tract. These capabilities make it a powerful ingredient for many herbal colon cleanse products.
  • Yellow Dock (Rumex Crispus): Its many therapeutic actions it boasts include tonic, cathartic, alterative, astringent and anti-syphilitic, et al. It is a very effective blood purifier and is superb for the lymphatic system.
