Natural Colon
Cleansing
Why Is Colon Cleansing Necessary? Or
Is It a Scam?
In truth, the
practice of natural colon cleansing actually goes back to ancient
Greece. In the United States, before the healthcare system was
co-opted by the Rockefeller and Carnegie Foundations with the now
infamous Flexner Report of 1910, practicing colon cleansing was
well known.
Notwithstanding the Rockefeller & Carnegie Foundations
desire to create an upper-class medical profession with drug
therapy being its foundation, natural colon cleansing still
persisted into the 1920s and 1930s.
Natural Hygiene or alternative health has experienced a
resurgence since the mid-1960s and colon cleansing or colon
cleaning is back in favor with many.
Colon cleansers have proliferated as well. Some work, some
don't, which is one of the reasons why this site was born.
This behooves the question is colon cleansing healthy? If so,
who needs it? Most medical doctors say it is not needed, even some
chiropractors, however some allopathic doctors, although their
numbers are few, are open minded like never before.
I'm hoping the info in this article will help you answer those
questions for you or at least help you in your research.
Okay, So, Just What is Natural Colon
Cleansing?
There are a couple colon-cleansing methods.
- You can see a doctor or an alternative health practitioner to
have a colonic irrigation
- You can buy colon cleansing products
- Combined with a high-fiber diet, you can take proven, healthy
and safe herbs as supplements to aid the colon cleaning process and
do it yourself at home
- Eat just fruits, vegetables and grains
- A combination of all the above
Let's start our discussion first with high colonics as the
preferred method of colon cleaning. High colonics (colon
irrigation) are popular. Colon irrigations are basically
enemas on steriods. They use a lot more water and do help
to sanitize the process as it can help minimize the discomfort and
unpleasant odors. How does a high colonic work?
You lie on your back on a table, a gravity-driven pump
flushes up to 20 gallons of water through a tube that is inserted
into your rectum. The entire process is a little disconcerting and
for those easily embarrassed, this is not the route to take.
The high colonic is administered by trained professionals who do
their best to put the patient at ease but it can be disconcerting
at best for many. The colonic practitioner may use a variety of
water pressures and temperature settings both for comfort of the
patient and for the strength of the cleaning.
The cleaning water may or may not combine water with coffee,
enzymes, herbs, or probiotics supplements. The waste water is
flushed out through another tube an sessions can last anywhere from
20 minutes to an hour. If you're interested in getting a high
colonic, check your local hospital or healthcare provider and they
can help you set up an appointment.
If you do decide to see a colon-cleansing practitioner, I
strongly suggest that you choose one who is licensed. This will
ensure safety and professionalism in the administration of the high
colonic. I also suggest that you talk with your licensed doctor
about a prospective colon cleanse.
It is ill advised to use any laxatives or colon irrigations for
long term. They can irritate or upset the balance of your colon's
bacteria and interfere with normal bowel function.
If you already have a colon problem, you should be very, very
careful of a high colonic and after consulting with your licensed
healthcare provider, you should advise your colonic therapist as to
your conditions. Generally speaking, if you have the following
conditions, you should first talk to your doctor before getting the
colonic:
- Crohn's disease
- Diverticulitis
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease
- Recent surgery, especially bowel-related surgery
- Severe or internal hemorrhoids
- Tumors in your rectum or colon
- Ulcerative colitis
Because of the risk for mineral imbalances, it is best if young
children do not undergo colon irrigations.
Do high colonics work? Yes and no. Yes, they can flush your
colon and intestines very well. But no, in that even a couple of
high colonics is insufficient to remove the mucoid plaque that has
built up over years. Colonics are helpful but not the sole
ingredient in a successful colon cleansing process.
They should be viewed as a tool to be used only rarely.
You Can Buy Colon Cleansing Products
There are many colon cleansing products on the market. There are
capsules, herbal teas, liquid supplements, powders, etc.
Most are ingested through the mouth but some are actually inserted
into your rectum! This makes sense as rectal suppositories are used
to rapidly administer drugs in some doctor-prescribed health
situations.
The purpose of these products is to ostensibly help evacuate the
massive build up of fecal matter in your intestinal tract and by
extension toxins as well. These products are available at grocery
stores, health food stores, some pharmacies and, of course, through
the Web.
Colon cleaning products basically include the following:
- Anti-parasite capsules
- Enema bags
- Enzyme tablets
- Herbal powders
- Herbal teas
- Medicinal herbs
- Non-herbal powders
- Strong, temporary laxatives
Needless to say, you can see there is no shortage of options
available to you. Which ones work and which ones you should avoid
is one of the purposes of this site.
Why a Colon Cleanse?
There are a couple of reasons why you should clean your colon
and intestinal tract:
- Auto-toxication
- Build up of excessive fecal matter throughout the intestinal
tract
- The colon is the sewer system of the body with many ills
directly attributable to an unhealthy intestinal tract
Even allopathic doctors admit that a wide range of symptoms is
caused by constipation and can be relieved by home enemas.
What Are The Benefits of Natural Colon
Cleansing? What Can I Expect from a Healthy Colon?
The benefits of a clean and healthy intestinal
trace are broad and wide reaching. From my experience, and the
experience of others, you will have some of the following benefits
come to you upon successfully cleansing your colon:
- Overall enhanced vitality
- Greater energy
- Weight loss
- Improved immune system
-
- Less suspectibility to disease
- Significantly reduced risk of colon or colorectal cancer
- Improved libido
- Every body system will operate at greater efficiency
Natural Colon Cleansing Possible Side
Effects
I recently came across a very telling statistic in Great
Britain regarding high colonics and colon cleansing in general. In
Britain, trained practitioners carry out 5,600 colon irrigations
each month without any serious side effects being reported.
It appears that colon cleansing is here to stay for the side
effects appear to be negligible at best and the benefits being
pronounced and numerous. That said, there are some potential side
effects. The following list is not comprehensive, but it is a list
that doctors say could happen:
- Cramps
- Dehydration
- Dizziness
- Sudden nausea
- Vomiting
- The body becomes reliant upon the colon cleaning
product
If you follow a colon cleansing regime, I suggest doing it with
judgment and wisdom.
The Most Important Things You Can Do For a
On-going Colon Cleanse
Your daily diet. There it is. Founding Father Ben Franklin was
right when he wrote, "We are what we eat." Colon cleansing products
are helpful. They do work and I can personally attest to that fact.
That said, what you eat will have the greatest impact on
your health and in general your intestinal health.
A high-fiber diet is a proven "technique" to keeping the colon
clean, reducing constipation, and avoiding intestinal-related
diseases like colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease and
diverticulitis.
Doctors recommend 20-35 grams of fiber a day. I actually
recommend more the older you get but I am not a doctor so I will
stick with that recommendation.
What type of fiber should you eat? First, a point. There are two
types of fiber, insoluble fiber such as what you'll find in grains
like wheat and rye, and soluble fiber such as you'll find in fruit
and vegetables. Both grains and fruits and vegetables are great for
the human organism and their fiber is needed for producing a
healthy intestinal tract.
You should also drink a reasonable amount of healthy fluids and
avoid red meat and meat in general. A little occasionally is all
right but eaten all the time is unhealthy. Meat should be used as a
flavoring agent in cooking and not be the main staple of your diet.
I can personally testify of the benefits of this.
I like meat too but all things considered, it is far from being
an ideal food. Eat it sparingly.
Realize if you're going on a one- or two-month colon cleanse
that it will be challenging. You'll get cravings, you'll get
irritable. It could be socially inconvenient. The mental
preparation could be more important than the acutal process
itself.
These tips come from experience. I hope they've been useful to
you.
Thanks for visiting.
Yours in health,
