My Colon Cleanse
Story
In 1981, before
the term colon cleanse was even in my
consciousness, I met a man who was not only a student of the late,
great Dr. John R. Christopher, the famed naturopathic doctor and
medicinal herbalist, but was a close friend of his as well.
My friend Kurt K. was one of his closest protégés and was able
to sip from the fount of wisdom and study Dr. Christopher had
acquired in his forty-plus years of study and experience.
"Cleanse. Nourish. Heal. That's the key to optimum health --
that's what Dr. Christopher teaches." Kurt said. It made
sense. As I learned more and more, he told me point blank one day
that I had a compacted colon or intestinal tract. "How do you know
that?" I asked him.
"I read it in your eyes," he said. Kurt is not only a master
herbalist but had achieved his certification in iridology as well.
Many consider iridology -- the process of determining the health of
a person through reading their eyes -- a pseudo science.
I don't know if that's true or not, but I found in time, he was
certainly correct in his assessment on my intestinal health but
also with another area of my health as well.
Due to Kurt's influence and example, I decided to become a
vegetarian and began severely changing my diet. I was rail thin,
only weighing 135-145 pounds at a height of 5'10". I didn't have
much weight to lose but that's not what I wanted to do: I wanted to
see if I could somehow achieve a state of optimum
health.
While I learned more and more about medicinal herbs and
naturopathic medicine, my friend Kurt's admiration and respect for
his mentor was always present. Hearing even a little bit about
Dr. Christopher's story inspired me and I was intrigued as
well.
Sidebar: Some of Dr. John R. Christopher's
Story
Dr. Christopher had advanced rheumatoid arthritis, hardening of
the arteries and other health issues that were so severe, doctors
told him he would be dead by the age of 40 or so. That didn't
happen. Dr. Christopher was born in 1909 and died in Feb. 1983. In
1939, though, he radically changed his diet when he came upon some
writings that said the best diet for man was one with meat eaten
sparingly and with fruits, grains and vegetables eaten in their
proper season.
My friend said Dr. C. had told him that as he changed his
diet, he noticed changes in the severity of his ailments.
With a healthy diet, he suffered little from his
rheumatoid arthritis.
However, when he included processed flour in his diet, it wasn't
very long before he had to use a cane. If he ate refined
sugars, he actually had to use a wheel chair. The coup de grace,
though, was when he included red meat in his diet, he'd soon find
himself confined to bed.
Dr. Christopher eventually cleared himself of all his health
problems due to the proper usage of medicinal herbs. He himself
became a naturopathic doctor, a master medicinal herbalist and the
only herbalist doctor in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also
became the bane of the medical establishment and they persecuted
and prosecuted him relentlessly for the success he had in actually
curing people of diseases.
My Mini-Experience With the Raw Food Diet
I thought that his story was inspiring and it proved the
truthfulness of an experiment I had tried the previous
year. Before I met my herbalist friend, I had a job working in
the oil fields in southern Louisiana. It was tough work for a kid
17-years old. I was tired most of the time, which I attributed to
the demanding work, but I was sure that was only a part of it.
I usually ate bologna sandwiches and potato salad for lunch if I
didn't buy the usual fare of burgers and fries and often found
myself really tired as the day wore on.
At that time, I had a hunch, an instinct, to try eating nothing
but fruit and/or vegetables raw. I gave it a try for a time and
found myself with a lot of natural energy that was very noticeable
to me and those I worked with. It intrigued me and opened the door
to other health experimentation later.
Upon returning to Logan, Utah in the early spring of 1981, I met
my herbalist friend Kurt K. I told him about my experiment and
he didn't seem fazed at all.
My First Colon Cleanse Experience Yields a Big
Surprise
I wanted to learn all I could and I took a job at my herbalist
friend's health food store for a time. Later, to make more money, I
took a job as an assistant surveyor trainee where I worked on the
Strawberry Reservoir area in Heber City, Utah. At that time, I
committed to go on an all-raw food diet. Mind you this is in the
early 80's before it was on the radar screen of the culture.
While working as an assistant surveyor, I was outside all day
and was experimenting on an all fruit and vegetable diet. Actually,
what I did was somewhat ill advised: I was eating almost exclusively fruit and
the fruit I did eat came out of the can! I was also
eating a lot of granola bars as well and easy-to-eat
vegetables like carrots and celery, but mostly fruit. I drank
only water.
Well, the cleansing symptoms began almost immediately: I started
urinating -- a
lot, which is a classic cleansing symptom.
Then, after about 30 days of this diet, I was out in the field
working and what I am about to say may sound unbelievable but on my
honor: I defecated seven times in one day! I know discussing the
scatalogical is unpleasant to talk about but it must done when
talking about colon cleansing.
Anyway, mind you it wasn't a little bit of fecal matter but
piles and piles of it that resembled a large snake coiled on the
ground. It came out easy enough too. All the fiber in the fruits
and veggies I was eating made that happen. The girth of the light,
cream-colored, snakelike piles was astonishing.
Afterwards, my manager had to go to the office for something and
I was left (told!) to stay in the truck, which I did. It was then
that I saw something remarkable: I caught a glimpse of my eyes in
the mirror and they had gone blue!!! I couldn't
have been more surprised!! My eyes had always been hazel with a
clear brown color around the pupil and blue in the outer edges.
My herbalist and an iridologist friend told me previously
that that was a classic iridology sign of a compacted colon. Again,
this information was gleaned through his "reading" my eyes and
nothing more.
I began to believe a little more in iridology; it was a
testament to me of the truthfulness of it. I just sat there looking
at my eyes for I was so astonished they had gone blue!
Something else happened. My stomach had also gone very,
very soft and was very, very pliable. My waist was really
small too. The effects of this rudimentary colon cleanse
were very evident and I was thrilled with my progress.
After finishing the job in Heber City, I returned to Logan, Utah
and tried to continue following the all-raw food diet. It was
painful! The cravings surprised me in their intensity. I simply
wasn't tough enough to get through them. I eventually gave in and
started eating sweets a lot but no meat.
Because my system was so healthy and cleansed, I broke out in a
terrible case of acne, which was not common for me. Think of your
libido being at its strongest and now multiply that by a factor
of two or three and you'll get an idea as to how strong my
cravings were. The cravings came in many forms but mostly
centered on sugar and cooked food.
That basically was the story for the next 20 years: remarkable
periods of discipline followed by tremendous undiscipline.
Eating so much junk food is terrible for your intestinal tract.
That's where I'm mainly to blame -- that and eating processed foods
due to their convenience. I am ashamed to say I went back to
the semi-healthy vegetarian diet soon thereafter and gave up eating
an all-raw diet.
I Need a Colon Cleanse!
Now, fast forward 27 years later.
Doing a colon cleanse is a big deal for me. I know I need it.
I'm older and while I'm not significantly overweight or in ill
health, I know my colon and whole intestinal tract is compacted
with mucoid plaque on the inner walls.
When I just stand and totally relax my stomach. It is puffed
tangibly outward. This is a classic sign of an over burdened
intestinal tract. My only consolation with that is that I see
people all the time that I know have worse intestinal health than
I. Still, there's no excuse.
I've known some real secrets to health but to be brutally
honest, I've simply lacked the discipline oftentimes to follow
through.
I love good food and while I've tried to eat healthy, it's been
very easy to fall into the "convenience trap" of buying processed
food and eating too much. It's easy to just buy a store-bought
pizza, like a DiGiornio's, spend 20 minutes heating it up and then
eating it. It's easier doing that than making a salad. Ice cream
tastes better than broccolli, and chips and salsa are more
satisfying than squash to be sure.
Through the years,
I've vacillated in the extreme sometimes. I had a roommate once
tell me I was the most undisciplined disciplined person he ever
met. I'd workout, eat fruit and vegetables one day and the next, a
whole box of doughnuts and a bag of chips with salsa by
myself.
I am basically a vegetarian but I do eat meat albeit
very, very sparingly. I never buy red meat. The
red meat I eat is on pizza and I eat pizza minimally. I think I've
literally eaten five or six steaks in 25 years. So, no, I'm
not a big red meat eater although I must confess I like the taste
of it.
This is somewhat gross and scatalogical but here goes: another
reason I know I need to do a colon cleanse is because of the size
of the stools I make after defecating. When I did my cleanse in
1982, the girth of the piles was quite large. As time has gone by,
I've noticed the girth of my stools has gotten gradually smaller
and smaller.
This is a clear-cut signal that my intestines have become more
and more caked with fecal matter that has turned to mucoid plaque,
I have no doubt.
When I was a boy, and I know this is odd, it used to surprise me
how large my stools were. As I've followed the western diet for
most of my life, excluding alcohol, caffeine, and red meat, I have
eaten a lot of junk food and gradually
over time, my intestines have become more and more compacted. The
"pipe bandwidth" of my intestines has simply gotten smaller and
smaller.
Sound odd? You're probably right. Think about it for yourself,
though. Look at a child's bowel movement or a young teenager's and
the size and girth of the movement and compare that to yours. It's
quite a difference. (Perhaps now you can see why a colon
cleanse is so vital as we get older.)
I assert again: 90% to 98% of human beings have an unhealthy
colon. If they didn't, their health would be so much better, with
fewer health ailments, and abundantly more energy. When my system
was clean in 1982, I felt that enhanced energy. A healthy colon is
a worthy goal to go after.
Summary -- Why Do a Colon Cleanse
So, why do I want to do a colon cleanse? Why do I want to
share what I know? I think I've answered it but here's more
precision. Because I want to challenge myself. Secondly, I want to
be healthier with vibrant health for the long term.
Additionally, I have done this before and I
know
there are tremendous health benefits to be derived. Fourth, I
want to share what I know and help people who come to this
site. It's always easier knowing something than
doing it. To my shame, that's me.
Knowledge is useless if it isn't applied. I have a good
constitution that has allowed me to enjoy uncommon health as I've
gotten older. I just turned 47 a few weeks ago and I play softball
regularly with a bunch of twenty somethings, run twice a week, play
tennis, and most people tell me I look 33 or so, which is always
flattering.
Lastly, I think all this will be interesting. I'm going to
create a colon cleanse blog and chronicle my experiences. I've got
a lot of conceptual knowledge, some practical and some eyewitness
testimonial info I wish to share.
Colon health is important and I believe more and more people are
interested in understanding more about colon
cleanse info than ever before. They should be too. So, that's
why I want to do this.
Thanks for visiting.
Yours in health,
